The Sapling
Приєднався 28 жов 2018
I'm working on evolution simulation game The Sapling, my solo indie game project. It's a game where you can basically do two types of things: on the one hand, there are a number of scenarios tasking you to design an ecosystem that meets specific requirements, on the other there is a sandbox where you can build your own plants and animals, turn on 'random mutations', and see how they evolve.
Island evolution: diverging paths (🧬Evolution Simulated #6)
Another video in the 'Evolution Simulated' series, showcasing simulation videogame The Sapling, where we follow one planet for a longer time. We study all the ecosystems that all evolve, and how they change over time.

Wessel, your game is an absolute gift. Though I've often tried visualizing evolution through drawings and world maps on my own, seeing organisms come to life in an alien environment all without my own input is truly something else! Het ga je goed en ik hoop dat dit spel alleen maar beter wordt! (ook al is het nu al fantastisch! :p)
Pls add random rocks that form somehow in here i would like to see that👍🏼.
Luv how the trees resemble mangrove
if this idea is already in the game please let me know! Idea: A tool that could terraform a landscape kind of like spore in the space stage, for me the current tools aren't working for what i want, like a tool that could create land and another that could create water.
@thesapling when will the next video be out waiting eagerly 😊
You should add a seed system for maps so u can share ur maps that u use for vids
Without making promises, it's an idea I like!
can you add a new size type for animals like how you can turn plants into grass but if you make the animal smaller it turns into a hive mind like ants and bee's and you can click on there homes to see whats happening inside
Without making promises, it's an idea I like
yo so theres a pretty minor bug but when you press x to skip the intro you can keep spamming it to replay the song
Haha thanks! It's a known bug, but it's been low prio for now
bruh i just wanna play sandbox but i cant since these animals dont know how to eat
Will evolution eventually reach a balance in this game, or will species continue to evolve and counterevolve? It seems some adaptations will always have to happen, for example legs to move to land, or drought resistance to live in the desert. Others seem to be able to change over and over again, for example the kind of seed produced, or whether to eat plants or meat.
In my experience, there continues to be some 'movement', but the longer you wait the smaller and less important these movements become.
Can algae actually evolve to become plants? I've tried this many times, of course with random mutations on, and I've never seen algae evolve into plants.
Perhaps it's related to allowed colors? When creating a planet, the habitability information should help you out here
am I watching National Geographic or a game
We need tectonic shift
I've been revisiting this channel since the start of the year, watching the latest playthroughs, only to never see any updates. Finally, welcome back
Could you make it easier for animals to crawl on to land? Every planet i’ve made no animal crawled on to land on their own without me mutating them, even if there is tons of food on land they refuse
Thanks for your input! I read more players have this problem; I don't really understand why yet, as it happened twice for me this run :/
can you ad hive minds
Wats the game called

tldr: recently cancelled my amazon prime and reinvested this money now in your game :) so with that i bought 4 copies and hope this helps you in your growth on steam. it would be nice if you add something which allows some sort of multiplayer or some sort of: sending creations to your friends or something like this. your game feels really wholesome and fun so i would love to see myself as a fish-sort of thing swimming through a world i managed with my fish-gang hahaha. i have never seen any video of yours but while researching my current topic and idea i stumbled upon this video and i must say i am really excited to see someone with a mindset close to mine. i am also one who tries to do everything myself as far as i come and to me this always felt like it really was something holding myself back since i get so overwhelmed at one point so i just drop the idea most likely for something new which feels less complicated just to end again in this situation where i am so overwhelmed :D. you are truely inspiring with your videos and i really appreciate you sharing your thoughts and struggles as well as your successes. with my new idea i hope i come close to where you're currently with sapling and not drop it at one point again.
Thanks so much for this comment and for sharing your idea! If it makes you feel any better, I also dropped many projects before this one, and it's only by pure chance that I didn't drop this one; see the '3 years of development' video ;)
I could not be anticipating anything more than this next video. Do you play on twitch? This so so rules.
Thanks so much! I used to do these things live on Twitch, but since barely anyone was watching live, I've switched to making these videos offline
@@TheSapling well dude I LOVE what you’re doing. Your analysis of this stuff ina game you freaking made is too cool.
for a idea is where their can be a map section that shows all the planets you created with life wheare you click one and return one sproe did in the glaxey map and can see the colers if land planst evovle and f
Without making promises, definitely a nice idea
just bought the game after sneaking out to buy a 20 dolla steam gift card hope its fun!!!
Can you make it so herbivores can evolve ways to escape fast carnivores? Like a hopping mechanic that can be used to run faster, or they can evolve ways to defeat carnivores.
All legs have a speed stat, so they could evolve faster legs, or horns etc... but I should add that I've never seen it happen in practice
Would love a new long run with the new updates.
Check the three latest videos :)
I just bought your game and I love it but I had some ideas for new features - you could add gender (and differences in gender) - a flower editor ( petals, monoecious/dioecious/hermaphroditic) - scales for skin - skin breathing - burrowing animals And so much more I would really appreciate it if you’d take a look at these ideas but you don’t have to
Without making promises, I indeed like a lot of these ideas!
Add volcanoes 🌋
Check the latest devlog ;)
Ohhh
Carnivorous plants would make an interesting and cool addition.
Without making promises, agreed
Update idea: mushroom and marsupial update
Without making promises, both ideas I like
Loving the new soundtracks!
It's crazy how different watching this series is after the Biblaridion alien biosphere series has ended. While sapience would be a cool feature in the game, I doubt it'd be easy in the slightest to implement - but after all of Biblaridion's series it's still cool to see stuff discussed there working in action.
i love this series! i wish it was available on mac
It is downloadable on steam. (If youre saying steam doesnt have it on mac then im not sure)
For completeness, in the FAQ there is some information on (the lack of) Mac support: thesaplinggame.com/faq
@@TheSapling thanks for the info! definitely makes sense. good luck with development!
can you add insect limbs hunting in packs coral territorial changing colours and exoseceliton stingers claws and jellyfish
make coral
Add it on Xbox play
Please
Truly a FAQ, see here: thesaplinggame.com/faq
Such a broad diversification!
You should add more texture to the leafs and make the leafs sway in the wind or in storms sway more
Belated thanks for your input!
@@TheSapling your welcome always happy to help
I think a cool addition could be a slightly easier way to figure out what body part does what, either in the information menu or in the mutate menu. Right now it can be difficult for a beginner to figure out what body part you find on a creature or plant does exactly what.
Belated thanks for your input!
This reminds me of species artificial life real evolution but I like the more cartoony vibe and the active development
well see you mabye 3 mounths later
You should add limbless body plans to the game. Stuff like snakes that can be both aquatic and terrestrial.
You should add fungus to the game! i think it would be cool having a new type of life thats nocturnal (basically plants that grow at night or in dark places) and they could grow on dead trees even! And also Maybe Insects as Another Editor Type? Like The small insects not the mouths. just ideas that i thought of! :D (edit: there would be insectivore mouths.)
Without making promises, I like many of these ideas :)
I think a really good adition to the game wpuld be more interactions between plants and other organismos: tall plants give shade to short plants, some plants produce herbicides, some plants make nutritious fruit so animals eat them and disperse their foods, etc
fruit already exists
That’s very interesting to me that sand box wasn’t the original idea and I really like your aditude of not caring how players enjoy your just that they enjoy the game
Weird idea:radial creatures like starfish. Instead of the animal being symmetrical on both sides like it normally is, the creature could have multiple limbs branching out, or maybe pull the limbs back to make an urchin-like thing? The possibilities with radial creatures are crazy
Not a weird idea at all (but no promises) ;)
Heres an idea for something in a later update, viruses. They could form in foods and traverse via various ways such as bites old meat proximity or maybe even water and could either be harmful or have completely no effect on the host. And whats more animals could also form resistances and weaknesses to it. Heck some viruses could affect instincts
Without making promises, it's an idea I like!
@@TheSapling cool!
Is there a natural disaster system in game? Like you know the ice age or meteoroid or oxygen levels (once in time oxygen wipe out animals)?
there are a few "events" you can trigger yourself (wild fires, volcano eruptions, and meteorite strikes). Wild fires can also tirgger by themselves. You can also increase/decrease global tmeperature, sea level, etc. You can also make cutom seasons which can each have different sea levels, temperatures, wind speeds, etc.
I've never been able to get to 55,000 years without a crash.
its probably due to the amount of organisms in your world at once. You can decrease the entity cap for algae, plants, and animals in the settings.
It was just a matter of time until he add sapience to the game
Oh it’d be so cool to see herd/small pack dynamics be a thing, for animals to hunt or make family’s easier✨ ( also great video- I love seeing updates on this game sm )
i mean technically its possible. With combinations of "if see colour" or "glow"/"if see glow" or "call"/"if hear call" alongside the "go towards" instinct, you can make creatures herd together. Example: With "If see food, call" alongside "If hear call, go towards" you can make animals herd near food.
I love this game so much im so excited for it’s official release
Are there any videos that are longer or perhaps some footage of an evolving system, aquatic or land?
Unfortunately, this game isnt very popular amongst youtubers at the moment. Although, there is always a possibility that someone made one in the past.
